The Swedish Steel Prize, which celebrates its 20th anniversary this year, aims to recognize the good engineering, cooperation and steel innovations that lead to a better and more sustainable world. Kampag, from Brazil, is one of the four finalists for this year's prize, which will be awarded during a ceremony in Stockholm, Sweden on November 14. The award ceremony is part of a three-day event where hundreds of international participants will take part in seminars and a site visit at SSAB.

Comments by the CEO

SSAB's operating profit, excluding items affecting comparability, for the third quarter of 2019 was SEK 300 million, down SEK 1,300 million compared with the third quarter of 2018. Lower earnings were primarily attributable to SSAB Europe. Group operating cash flow for the third quarter was SEK 1,038 (1,922) million.

"For the 20th anniversary of the Swedish Steel Prize, the four finalists we have nominated each have a strong connection to a stronger, lighter and more sustainable future. They all show that with new perspectives and innovative thinking comes possibilities to continue moving forward, pushing not only their own industry but also society as a whole," says Eva Petursson, chair of the Swedish Steel Prize jury and head of SSAB's research and innovation.

SSAB: HYBRIT: SEK 200 million invested in pilot plant for storage of fossil-free hydrogen in Luleå

The HYBRIT initiative began in 2016. By using fossil-free electricity and hydrogen instead of coke and coal in steel production, the emissions will be water instead of carbon dioxide. The initiative has the potential to reduce Sweden's total carbon dioxide emissions by 10 percent.

The plan is to build the new hydrogen gas storage facility 25-35 meters below the ground surface on LKAB's land in Svartöberget, close to the pilot plant currently under construction on SSAB's site in Luleå. The hydrogen storage facility is expected to operate from 2022 to 2024.

UN Secretary-General António Guterres invited the world to a Climate Action Summit on 23 September to present concrete, realistic plans to reduce greenhouse gas to net-zero emissions by 2050. Sweden, together with India, has been commissioned to demonstrate the importance of the industry for the transition to a sustainable and fossil free society.
