Orthex is a Finnish manufacturer and supplier of household products. The company offers products such as plastic storage boxes, cutting boards, pots, bowls and other kitchen accessories. The majority of the range is accessed digitally via the company's e-commerce platform, and the products are also offered through licensed retailers. The largest operations are found in the Nordic market.

What would @Thomas_Westerholm think, given that Orthex’s M&A developments have been a source of suspense for a few years now? Shouldn’t Orthex sell its kitchen products (and brands?), excluding kitchen storage products, for example, to Fiskars, and as a relatively small player, invest more strongly in, for example, glass storage solutions? This would make its own strengths even stronger and, on the other hand, eliminate peripheral businesses where competitive advantages are quite negligible compared to major players. Was there some legacy from the Swedish and Finnish product development organizations behind this that keeps these peripheral businesses included?

A somewhat positive report from Orthex, but the quality of development is limited by positive currency exchange rate effects, the bringing forward of seasonal campaigns to Q3, and a reduction in sales and marketing expenses. The most crucial thing now is to sustainably accelerate growth in the Rest of Europe, as that is where the key potential lies over the next 5 years.  Yes, exactly. I understand the logic that campaigns aim to increase demand, from which perspective they can be compared to marketing expenses. In my view, however, the effects of campaigning are clearly more focused on the near future or the current quarter, whereas sales and marketing investments aim to build longer-term benefits – such as new distribution channels or a stronger brand image. Of course, campaigns can also improve retailer relationships and generate additional shelf space, or a consumer who purchased through a campaign may return to Orthex products later. However, repurchase cycles for quality products are often long. From a strategic perspective, lowering prices or campaigning is easy to justify if a company has a structural cost advantage and aims to position itself as a low-cost player – such as Costco, Revolut, or H&M. In Orthex’s case, however, the strategic positioning clearly leans on quality. For this reason, excessive campaigning can weaken the consumer’s perception of the product’s price or, at worst, even its quality. This is why I feel that an additional euro of revenue achieved through sales and marketing investments is more valuable to Orthex than additional sales generated through campaigns.

The balance sheet can be found towards the end of the report. Financial institution loans - cash assets are approximately €3.5 million. In addition to this, there are also lease liabilities.

It should be noted, however, having listened to the recent CEO interview and watched the webcast, that it somehow sounded like a bit of revenue had been borrowed from adjacent quarters with campaigns and other timings, which perhaps slightly lowered expectations for the future. Marketing costs were lower now than before, but some “marketing costs” were visible higher up due to more campaign discounts. CEO Thomas stated this in his interview.

Over a 10% increase in a month; considering that, I thought the morning’s price spike was quite unreasonable. To me, the numbers still look quite good, especially considering they were made at a time when domestic market consumer confidence has been at rock bottom.
