Gränges joins First Movers Coalition to accelerate aluminium decarbonization

Gränges

Gränges joins the First Movers Coalition to accelerate the decarbonization of the aluminium industry. Securing access to low-carbon primary and recycled aluminium is essential for Gränges in reducing the climate impact of its solutions and driving towards its 2040 net-zero target.

The First Movers Coalition (FMC), the World Economic Forum’s flagship decarbonization initiative, is a global coalition of companies leveraging their purchasing power to decarbonize the world’s heavy-emitting sectors. These sectors include aluminium, aviation, cement and concrete, steel, shipping, trucking, as well as carbon dioxide removal. By aggregating the purchasing commitments from its members, the coalition is working to create the world’s largest private-sector demand for industrial decarbonization technologies.

“We are very proud to join the First Movers Coalition. Strong partnerships and collaboration across the value chain are essential for a successful decarbonization of the aluminium industry. Supporting the upstream transition to low-carbon technologies is a critical action in our net-zero plan, and this is another important step for us. I look forward to engaging in the coalition and fulfilling Gränges’ commitments”, said Sofia Hedevåg, SVP Sustainability, Gränges Group.

Gränges is the 100th member to join the coalition. Securing access to recycled and low-carbon input materials is a key enabler for Gränges to offer circular and sustainable aluminium solutions to its customers and meeting its ambitious SBTi validated climate goals.

As a joining member, Gränges has made the following 2030 commitments:

  • At least 10 percent (by volume) of all its primary aluminium procured per year will be low carbon (as per the First Movers Coalition definition).
  • At least 50 percent of all aluminium procured per year will be sourced from secondary aluminium.

These commitments complement the company’s 2030 climate and circularity goals and reaffirm its pathway towards net-zero by 2040. They are subject to the availability of technology supply that enables Gränges to meet its 2030 purchase pledges.

“Gränges’ commitment to the aluminium sector represents a significant milestone for the First Movers Coalition”, said Rob van Riet, Interim Head of the First Movers Coalition. “Not only is Gränges the 100th member of FMC, but as a global leader in aluminum rolling and recycling, Gränges brings valuable knowledge of the sector and purchasing power that will help to accelerate FMC’s mission to scale low-carbon primary and secondary aluminium.”
