CAMBI: Cambi enters Egypt with a major contract in Alexandria

CAMBIRegulatoriskt pressmeddelande09.09.2026 klo 10.12
Discuss
Cambi has signed a major contract with a joint venture of Metito Water Treatment
and Hassan Allam Construction to supply four thermal hydrolysis process (THP)
systems and ancillaries for the Alexandria West wastewater treatment plant, in
Alexandria, Egypt.

The contract begins with an engineering phase. Manufacturing is expected to
commence following a later notice to proceed.

Cambi's THP technology will treat the plant's biological solids before anaerobic
digestion. The overall project will refurbish the existing plant, increase
capacity to meet population growth, and introduce biological treatment and
anaerobic digestion.

By enabling the digesters to operate at substantially higher loading rates, THP
reduces the required number of digesters from 16 to 8. Poor ground conditions
and high groundwater make each large digester costly and complex to construct.
Avoiding eight deep foundations will significantly reduce civil construction
expenditure.

THP is also expected to save space on a land-constrained site, increase biogas
production, and improve dewatering, thereby reducing the volume of final solids
for disposal. The additional renewable electricity generated enables the site to
become energy self-sufficient. The drier final solids are expected to reduce
disposal volumes with the equivalent of around 20 fewer 25-tonne truckloads each
day.

Per Lillebø, CEO of Cambi, remarked:
"Alexandria West marks Cambi's entry into the Egyptian market. We look forward
to supporting the project and building on this first delivery in Egypt."

Alexandria West is one of the city's two main wastewater treatment plants and
serves the city's central and western neighbourhoods. The project is expected to
improve wastewater management to meet Egyptian effluent standards and reduce
pollution affecting nearby lakes, bays, and the Mediterranean Sea.

Construction is coordinated by the Egyptian Construction Authority for Potable
Water and Wastewater (CAPW) and financed by the European Investment Bank, the
European Union, and Egyptian national resources.

In addition to the THP systems, Cambi's delivery will also comprise steam
boilers, heat exchangers, and the design of the anaerobic digestion process.

The value of the engineering phase is equivalent to a small contract for Cambi,
while the total project value is equivalent to a major contract.

The project's current timeline has equipment delivery scheduled for 2028, with
operations starting in 2029.

About Cambi

Cambi is a global provider of technologies and services for water and wastewater
treatment and organic materials management. Since 1992, the company has served
utilities, municipalities, and industrial customers.

The thermal hydrolysis process (THP) remains Cambi's core technology. More than
100 Cambi THP systems are in operation across more than 25 countries on 6
continents. The process is used in conjunction with anaerobic digestion to
enhance the treatment of organic feedstocks, increase biogas production, improve
dewatering, and reduce final biosolids volumes. It can be integrated into new
and existing facilities and supports downstream routes ranging from land
application to thermal processing.

The wider portfolio includes technologies for nutrient recovery and digestion,
lifecycle services, biosolids logistics and land application, composting, and
soil production.
