Europe's EV charging networks are delivering more energy, at higher power and in less time, new Kempower data shows

KEMPOWRPressmeddelande01.09.2026 klo 10.00
Discuss
  • Kempower has analyzed four years of charging data from 11 European markets gathered through its charging management system, ChargEye
  • The findings reveal rising energy demand, increasing charging power and shorter charging sessions as Europe's charging infrastructure matures
  • They also suggest that the industry’s next challenge may not be increasing charging power, but utilizing existing capacity more efficiently

New analysis of EV charging data collected by Kempower reveals that the public charging ecosystem is maturing across Europe. ChargEye data collected between 2022 and 2025 across 11 European countries shows that EV infrastructure is delivering more energy per session, reaching higher charging power and taking less time to do so, signaling that infrastructure is advancing and delivering more value for drivers.

Included in the dataset are insights from countries across Europe: Norway, Sweden, Finland, Denmark, the UK, Netherlands, Belgium, France, Spain, Portugal and Italy.

Key findings:

  • Peak power delivered is up 32%
  • Energy delivered per charging session is up 12%
  • Charging sessions are 3% faster
  • Average charging sessions take approximately 35 minutes
  • In all markets, a clear gap exists between peak power and average power delivered, indicating opportunities for smarter power management

The findings suggest growing confidence in public charging infrastructure as EV adoption increases, with drivers charging with larger amounts of energy while benefiting from faster and more capable charging networks.

While Nordic countries remain Europe's most mature charging markets with the highest peak powers and fastest charging times, the data highlights rapid progress elsewhere in the continent. The UK recorded the highest average energy delivered per charging session (30 kW) among the countries analyzed, while southern European markets continued to narrow the gap with clear advancements being made in peak power growth and energy delivered.

However, across all 11 markets analyzed, average delivered charging power remained significantly below peak power demand – for example, in the UK, peak power was 79 kW while the average power delivered sat at 52.9 kW. This gap points to opportunities to improve efficiency through smarter power distribution, for example by using distributed charging systems that dynamically balance power load across multiple individual chargers.

The data was obtained from Kempower’s cloud-based charging management platform, ChargEye, which integrates with Kempower’s charging hardware to provide real-time insights into charging sessions, charger performance and faults.

Jussi Vanhanen, Chief Product Officer at Kempower, said: "For years, the conversation around EV charging has focused on speed. The data suggests the industry is delivering this successfully but is perhaps entering a new phase. As charging networks mature and utilization grows, success will increasingly be measured by how many vehicles can be served efficiently, not simply by how much charging power can be installed. Giving more vehicles access to charging and dynamically distributing available power can help operators get more from their charging infrastructure.”

Kempower’s distributed charging architecture dynamically shares available power between multiple charging points based on real-time vehicle demand.
