The question is highly relevant, and I would extend it almost to the 2024 dividend decision. At that time, the balance sheet was at least as tight based on the net debt/EBITDA ratio, which is a financial target and typically a key metric for creditors.  The debts will naturally be divided between both companies. This is a very complex process, influenced by several factors, ranging from the businesses’ debt servicing capacity to the company’s choices, taxation, and restrictions imposed by creditors. The CMD left the impression that, as a basic assumption, both companies will incur net debt. However, not all debt components will necessarily be divided between both companies. I would say that the packaging business, with its current profitability and cash flow profile, and their outlook, cannot bear a particularly heavy debt load. The “forest company,” on the other hand, would better carry debt due to its balance sheet (cf. typical LTV levels in real estate investment). However, the return on assets in the “forest company” is low, so using very expensive debt to finance the “forest company” would be questionable, at least in the long run.

The potential impact of the Joutseno closure on the pulpwood market is largely already priced into current prices, as it has mostly been shut down for the past year. And UPM’s and SE’s pulp mills have also been operating below capacity. Still, pulpwood prices are 20-25% higher than before the war, and prices for all species have risen again in the last 3-6 weeks. It will be interesting to see UPM’s Q1 results. Has Finnish pulp production returned to profitability and what was the operating rate in Q1?
