Optomed operates in the medical technology sector. The company conducts research and development of specialized eye cameras. Development takes place of both hardware and software that are resold under different brands. Operations are held on a global level, with the largest presence in the Nordic market. Customers consist of research institutes and hospitals. The company has its headquarters in Oulu.

AI challenges this claim:  Traditionally, a diabetic patient is referred by a primary care provider (PCP) separately to an ophthalmologist. In the US, up to 50% of these patients never book or attend this follow-up visit. Optomed’s camera allows the examination to be performed immediately, and a nurse can take the images in the room where the patient already is. In the US Medicare system, there is a dedicated reimbursement code (CPT 92229) specifically for autonomous AI. This eliminates the need for remote consultation, which can take days of waiting. Immediate billing and care coordination become possible. In the US, insurance companies (such as UnitedHealth or Humana) are increasingly sending nurses to patients’ homes to conduct annual check-ups. Optomed’s portability is superior here. Star Ratings connection: Fundus screening performed during a home visit is an inexpensive way for insurance companies to secure the previously mentioned Diabetes Care – Eye Exam metric, which boosts their Star Rating bonuses. Avenue integrates with the most common EHR systems (such as Epic or Cerner). The image and AI report are automatically transferred to the patient’s electronic health record. This saves medical staff time and minimizes human error.  If AI messages are considered spam, this can be deleted. In my opinion, this is valid information related to this dialogue.

This is a clear care gap, as there aren’t enough ophthalmologists, and even when they are available in the area, people don’t bother going because it requires a separate effort. Studies have been linked on this forum as well showing that AI scanning fits into the workflow, is financially viable, and has reduced the number of people skipping examinations.

This uncertainty has potentially slowed sales in recent months, but fortunately, that impediment has now been removed. For some, the retention of reimbursements may have been a threshold issue for the adoption of Aurora AEYE.

There is so much hype in the US/China right now that it would be a miracle if Optomed’s numbers haven’t risen this year and guidance isn’t revised upwards.

Good morning, We’ll definitely add that to the list of questions. I don’t really believe this would have been a huge deal for the company / guidance, as I don’t think it has come up in communication within the industry. We have at least asked about all sorts of threats and opportunities related to potential changes in the US market, but it could be that they just didn’t want to speculate on a matter that was still ongoing. But if it had affected the outlook and guidance, it would have still been justified to communicate it clearly – and perhaps leave the speculation about the outcome to others. But we’ll look into it when there’s a chance. You can’t inquire during the quiet period.
