QT Group operates in the IT sector. The group develops various development tools for the global market. The technology is based on QT technology and is used to develop multi-platform interfaces and associated applications. The services are used in, among other things, industrial robots, entertainment systems, and vehicle systems. Operations are conducted on a global level and customers are found in the automotive and aerospace industries.

Qt is much more than a programming tool. Below is Qt’s offering. Cursor competes with the “Development Tools” and “Qt Creator IDE” boxes. Even in Cursor, AI-generated code practically always uses some framework. That framework could very well be Qt Framework, which is just as “AI-native” as any other widely used framework.  Qt doesn’t have a data moat, of course, but even ERPs’ (Enterprise Resource Planning) data moat is no longer insurmountable. In practice, no informed buyer has for a long time adopted systems from which they cannot extract their own data with reasonable effort, so all players must enable it. A bigger moat is likely the effort and risks of implementing a new system in a large organization. Qt has a somewhat similar moat in its current customers’ product development pipeline. Furthermore, the proliferation of AI coding strengthens Qt Framework’s position against new and smaller challengers, because APIs (Application Programming Interfaces) are established and there are plenty of relevant code examples available in language model training data. This means that AI coding works better with Qt than with some newer, less established, and less used framework. Cursor and similar tools can indeed erode the use of Qt Creator if Qt developers switch to using them, but bringing similar AI coding features to Qt Creator would be no rocket science, and a solution optimized for Qt Framework could very well work better than Cursor’s more generic one. AI can also enable the creation of new competitors for Qt’s offering faster than before, but I don’t see that, especially in the embedded world, entire code stacks will be coded separately for each project using AI. Frameworks will always be in use, and their maturity will be a major factor in customers’ purchasing decisions. This is my view based on twenty years of software development experience.

That claim is based on the assumption that the hundred largest owners would not sell their shares. The actual free float for Qt is almost 80%, assuming Ingman’s ownership is permanent. The number of shorts is indeed significant, but the situation could remain the same for a long time.

I use Cursor in my work, and it has significantly accelerated software development. Qt is a programming tool. I don’t see why Qt functionalities wouldn’t be available in these tools within a few years. These vendors have “endless” funding and the best teams. It’s hard to imagine coding tools outside of these succeeding, especially since Qt isn’t AI-native, making developer productivity significantly lower when using Qt compared to an agent-based coding tool. Even though these tools can’t yet do work within Qt’s scope, it’s certainly in the development pipeline and will be available soon. Qt is thus much less protected than, say, an ERP system, where business data is stored, and it has access rights, etc., and the organization is accustomed to using it.

Why do you think Qt would need to actively engage in some kind of short squeeze? It’s better for them to focus on what they’re good at. It would be a bit strange for them to start buying massively and then dump shares back to panicked short sellers at a higher price after a while. Is this even legal? These short positions probably don’t affect Qt’s value much anyway. Price fluctuations today certainly don’t significantly affect what Qt is worth now or in 10 years. Of course, it probably affects loan terms and share exchanges, etc., but if these are not considered. Of course, if the management felt that the stock was undervalued, then it might be good to buy back shares, but they don’t need to do it because of short selling. In my opinion, it doesn’t matter whether they buy back shares from a long-side investor or a short seller.

Major shareholders, like Ingman, are probably asked to lend out shares. They have the opportunity to lend out shares and receive hard cash as a reward. In such a situation, it is possible for a major shareholder to benefit. They lend shares, buy more with them, and at the same time can wield the gavel in deciding on share repurchases. None of this is illegal. A similar situation occurred with Kone a few years back, when Herlin bought shares and decided on repurchases while lending out shares at the same time.
