Taaleri operates in the financial sector. The company is a Nordic private equity fund company that focuses on renewable energy and other alternative investments. The company has two business segments: Equity Funds and Strategic Investments. With its capital funds, Taaleri creates, for example, wind and solar power, biofuels and real estate. The company was founded in 2007 and its head office is located in Helsinki, Finland.

Now I have to be a bit skeptical. Without knowing anything more about the team to be acquired, it sounds really optimistic to assume the goal is to grow the fund size from 45 MEUR to 100-200M. If we forget about Lifeline Ventures, whose track record is absolutely exceptional (and who only now, with their sixth fund, reached over 200M and simultaneously over 400M), Finland has only ever raised a couple of 100M funds. Open Ocean and Inventure are somewhere around there, but are there others? And both of them have a twenty-year track record. So, for a new team to reach that size is a lot to assume, although certainly not impossible – as I said, I don’t know anything more about the team. But let’s still assume the next fund would be 100m. If a 45M fund generates zero profit, a 100m fund’s revenue will not triple, because typically the fee for an old fund at that stage is no longer based on commitments but on invested capital – so the fee base could be around 130m, assuming nothing has been sold from the old portfolio yet. If we assume a 2% fee, the fee growth would be 2%*45m → 2%*130m, i.e., 0.9m → 2.6m. Quite good growth, but in the big picture, it’s on the wrong side of the decimal point. But expenses don’t stay constant. A larger fund requires a larger team. VC operations certainly don’t scale very well. If there has been zero profit historically, with a larger fund, team expenses could easily double. So let’s say expenses increase from 0.9m to 1.8m. I think this might also be wishful thinking, but it would still leave 0.8m of extra profit. Success? Perhaps, but as part of Taaleri, regulation will also likely affect it more than a small VC fund, meaning increased compliance and risk management, etc., will eat into that further. All in all, IF, against all odds, the funds can be scaled to the 100m+ range, then a few hundred thousand in profit might come from there. And of course, if everything goes well, the subsequent fund could be even larger and more profitable, and on the other hand, perhaps in 10 years, significant profit distributions might be expected. However, that’s a long way off, even though there is potential. In a way, the direct monetary risk for Taaleri is probably limited, but the danger is that it will divert management’s focus to the wrong place as operations become even more fragmented in every direction. It could certainly bring in a nice additional business in the coming years if everything goes well, but the probabilities are not in its favor.

You’re absolutely right that we are developing the Other Private Equity Funds segment, which currently accounts for EUR 12 million out of our ~EUR 300 million sum-of-parts. Even if that segment’s value were to double or triple, its impact on the group is relatively limited compared to Energy or Garantia moving in some direction. Of course, it would be highly desirable if Taaleri could turn the Other Private Equity Funds into a clear positive, as it would help in unlocking the sum-of-parts discount. Currently, the market is very likely giving this segment a negative value (because the result is negative).

There probably isn’t a very big difference in opinion here in the end. A matter of emphasis or perspective, perhaps. Sure, the investors are institutions as in Taaleri’s other funds, but not necessarily the same ones. Or even if they are the same, at least the allocation and the person responsible are usually different. In that case, the existing energy fund sales channel might not be as valuable as one would hope. But it certainly isn’t worthless either. Regarding the research-driven approach, execution is of course the essential thing. I can’t speak to that more specifically, but many do at least claim to be organized around it. And of course, early-stage VC isn’t pointless no matter how much competition there is, but again, it’s specifically the execution that determines success. Personally, I don’t necessarily see that Taaleri would have any particular edge in this regard compared to other VC investors. They don’t even claim to be looking for energy sector startups, do they? In those, there could in principle be some synergy. And in my opinion, the value of a “Jyri” or “Timo” comes above all in fundraising. It’s much easier for an investor to jump on board when there’s a long-term track record, including exits. Taaleri’s track record is from completely different activities. And it can also matter for deal flow when it comes to the hottest cases.

Another thing came to mind regarding this. VC (Venture Capital) is a people business. Much more than traditional asset management or even real estate investing, investors follow “golden hands” (successful individuals). The fact that this team is now part of Taaleri itself won’t bring many, if any, new investors to the next fund. Investors invest, if they do, in the team. Recruiting “golden hands” is incredibly difficult in general, but it’s especially hard for a corporation where the fruits of potential success must be shared with shareholders. There aren’t many publicly traded companies in the world that successfully do high-volume VC investing; usually, they are firms with a few partners. EQT perhaps, but that’s about it.

The property is located in the rapidly developing area of Yliskylä, Laajasalo, and consists of 41 high-quality rental apartments. With the completion of the Kruunuvuorensilta tram connection in the near future, the location will offer a new level of accessibility, enabling fast and effortless connections to the city center. The property is designed with everyday comfort in mind, and each apartment features, among other things, a glazed balcony and apartment-specific cooling. A shared laundry room, sauna, and group room are available for all residents. The Laajasalo area offers a wide range of services, such as grocery stores, restaurants, schools, a health center, and sports facilities. The area’s green spaces and proximity to the sea also serve active outdoor enthusiasts. This is an energy-efficient property with an A energy rating according to the EU Taxonomy, utilizing geothermal heating. Construction of the property will begin immediately and will be carried out by Jatke Uusimaa Oy. The property is estimated to be completed in 2027.

In my opinion, this is actually a pretty interesting move by Taaleri.   The scale is still small here (NSI ~1 MEUR revenue and profit about zero), but if the next fund reaches the 100–200 MEUR range, the leverage will be in a completely different class. So, in a way, this is looking for an option for the future, not yet profit.   It’s also positive that this isn’t a “generic VC expansion,” but a research-driven angle. It stands out quite well in the Finnish market, where the traditional PE/fund of funds setup is already quite crowded.   I don’t see this as a business driven by individuals as much as many might think at first reaction. Taaleri already has larger funds and distribution channels → if these can be combined with early-stage activities, it could become a perfectly functional “pipeline.”   From an entrepreneur’s perspective, this could even be a good combo: the same partner can be involved in the early stage and later with larger tickets. That’s not entirely self-evident in Finland.   And as a side note: if we ever see a new wave of real estate/construction startups (PropTech, etc.), such a player could be a surprisingly relevant financier for that angle.   Of course, we are still clearly “to the left of the pipeline,” and the impact on the numbers won’t be significant in the coming years, but strategically, I think it’s a perfectly sensible move.

I want to be a bit difficult for a moment and push back.   This “if” is exactly the problem here. Where is the money coming from? It is certainly not a given.  To me, this is exactly a rather generic VC expansion. All early-stage investors are looking for research-based targets to find the next Iceye or IQM. It then depends on the team whether they can find and win the best targets.  See the previous bullet. It is very much people-driven. Of course, the distribution channel should help, but the fact that there is already a large infra fund in the same house doesn’t necessarily mean much for this. I suppose there could be some of the same investors (does Tesi invest in energy?), but none of them invest just because it’s Taaleri. Instead, they look at the team they would be giving their money to. Some foundation-types, if there are good relationships with them, are probably the most likely group.
