Wärtsilä specializes in power solutions for the marine and energy sectors. The business is managed based on several business segments and the range includes integrated system solutions, spare parts, and associated service functions during the installation cycle, but also complete operation and optimization services. The company was originally founded in 1834 and is headquartered in Helsinki, Finland.

It looks like there will be a larger piece on Wärtsilä regarding the data center theme in tomorrow’s Helsingin Sanomat. Published online about an hour ago (paywall): Wärtsilästä tuli yllättävä tekoälymenestyjä | HS.fi A couple of quotes:  ”In the United States, a large portion of the planned data centers intend to produce their electricity in their own gas power plants, as the waiting time for grid connections has stretched to an average of eight years.” …  ”Demand for Wärtsilä’s engines for data center use is only just waking up. According to Agnevall, mainly because their excellence is not well known.”

I can say as feedback that it was an exceptionally good information package. Both parties had clearly done their homework, and although it was a long interview, time flew by. Energy storage is indeed a wildcard for Wärtsilä, for better or worse; otherwise, the engine is certainly firing on all cylinders. Of course, it wouldn’t hurt if Wärtsilä’s investor relations shared even more about this energy storage, perhaps even enough for its own YouTube content, as this side of Wärtsilä’s story is quite new and still a somewhat unwritten chapter. Personally, I see a lot of potential here for the future, but will Wärtsilä be steamrolled by other larger players, or is this, on the contrary, a new cash flow machine with synergies found within the group? Thanks to Karo and Hanna-Maria for a high-quality information package that was a pleasure to listen to! This was a textbook example of how an interview can include lightheartedness and humor without ruining the substance with unnecessary forced banter.

There was a meeting between Big Tech and Trump at the White House yesterday; I read a New York Times article (paywall, https://www.nytimes.com/2026/03/04/climate/data-centers-electricity-trump.html). As I understand it, the results remained somewhat vague, but the tech companies building data centers committed voluntarily to providing additional capacity in connection with their centers. A couple of quotes from the piece: “Yet the pressure will keep building. Data centers today use around 5 percent of U.S. electricity, and that could grow to as much as 17 percent by 2030 as interest in A.I. grows, according to the Electric Power Research Institute.” “At the White House event on Wednesday, Mr. Trump said that under the new ratepayer protection pledge, tech companies would pay for any power plants and grid upgrades needed for their data centers and willingly pay higher rates. “They’re going to be producing massive amounts of electricity and energy on the grid, so the American consumers aren’t going to have to even think about it, and your electric costs are going to be going down,” Mr. Trump said.” Energy researcher Abe Silverman (Johns Hopkins University): “Talk is cheap, power plants are expensive,” Mr. Silverman said. “The big question is whether, after making these big commitments at the White House, we’re going to see Big Tech show up in the halls of Harrisburg and Annapolis and Trenton and actually walking the walk. Because… well, uh, look at the picture. From one data center project, I saw that the power distribution to the server racks was done in blocks. Power was always supplied to a couple of rows of server racks through an electrical switchboard installed in a container like that. I don’t remember for sure if, under normal conditions, one transformer fed one such electrical container or if the supply arrangements were somehow different. However, for each such electrical container, there was a dedicated generator container to back up the supply for that specific electrical container. In that facility, there were more than a dozen of those server row-electrical container-genset container blocks, and the power levels were probably in the 1-2 MW per block range. So, that large number of backup generators is due to this modular block approach that these data centers seem to favor. The facility is easy to scale when everything is modular and built from specific pieces. With a total capacity of 885 MW and that number of backup generators, the power per block would be around 1.8 or 2.5 MW, which would sound reasonable.
