Alma Media Corporation                    Press release 21 September 2020
ALMA MEDIA TO HIGHLIGHT ENVIRONMENTAL RESPONSIBILITY AND THE POSSIBILITIES OF YOUNG PEOPLE TO MITIGATE CLIMATE CHANGE ON ZERO EMISSIONS DAY

Alma Media and the Finnish Children and Youth Foundation, Climate Leadership Coalition (CLC), Neste and Otaniemi upper secondary school are encouraging everyone to participate in the Zero Emissions Day on 21 September 2020. The goal of the international Zero Emissions Day is to give the world a break from fossil fuels, raise awareness of the climate impact of choices made by consumers and corporations and motivate and encourage everyone to build a sustainable society.

CLC began organising the event in Finland in 2017. CLC's goal is to develop business-oriented climate change solutions, and it is the largest non-profit climate business network in Europe. CLC has 73 organisations as members in Finland.

This year, the Finnish Children and Youth Foundation, a long-time partner of Alma Media, is in charge of cooperation with educational institutions for the first time. The foundation has provided schools with learning material that helps teachers address climate change with their pupils. The material includes videos of young climate activists produced by Alma Media.

- Climate change is one of the most significant phenomena that undermine young people's visions about the future. This year, we and our partners wanted to give young people an opportunity to explore a future with zero emissions. It is important to involve young people to a greater extent in developing solutions for mitigating climate change, says Olli Alanen, Executive Director of the Finnish Children and Youth Foundation.

- Climate Leadership Coalition wants to support the transition to a carbon neutral society and consumerism in an economically viable manner. Companies must have the means to secure adequate funding for the change in order to develop the required technological solutions. In addition, the ability to respond to the threats posed by climate change and the sustainability of natural resources and the ability to take advantage of the business opportunities that emerge as a result are required. Ambitious climate goals and the transition to a world based on sustainable development require not only the efforts of corporations but actions from each and everyone of us, and young people play a particularly important role, says Jorma Ollila, former Vice Chairman of the CLC Board of Directors and current personal member. Jorma Ollila is also the Chairman of the Board of Directors of Alma Media.

Zero Emissions Day is part of the corporate responsibility efforts taken by Alma Media for several decades. In 2018, Alma Media was the third media company in the world to set environmental objectives according to the Science-Based Targets initiative (SBTi). The corporation's target is to reduce the direct CO2 emissions generated by its operations and the indirect CO2 emissions from its subcontracting chain by improving the energy efficiency of properties and developing logistics and the use of materials, for example. In Finland, Alma Media has begun to use emission-free electricity.

The largest weekly financial magazine in the Nordic countries, Talouselämä, published by Alma Talent, is the first completely carbon neutral printed journal published in Finland. The first completely carbon neutral issue will be published on Friday 25 September 2020.
