Nokia’s stock just seemed to react positively to Ciena’s results. A summary of it below.  For the fiscal fourth quarter of 2025, Ciena reported revenue of $1.35 billion, a 20% increase compared to the same period in 2024. The fiscal year 2025 revenue was $4.77 billion, up 19% year-over-year. The company’s net income per diluted share for the quarter was $0.13 GAAP and $0.91 adjusted (non-GAAP), compared to $0.25 and $0.54, respectively, in the previous year.  1. Strong Growth and Future Outlook  Record Quarter: Ciena achieved its highest ever quarterly revenue ($1.35 billion), an increase of 20.3% compared to the previous year. Full-Year Growth: Full fiscal year 2025 revenue was $4.77 billion, an increase of 18.8%. Strong Guidance for 2026: Ciena provided very strong guidance for fiscal year 2026: revenue is expected to be $5.7–$6.1 billion. This forecasts an average of 20–28% growth for 2026. Increased Margin: The expected non-GAAP operating margin will rise to 17% in 2026 (compared to 11.2% in 2025), indicating significantly improved profitability.  2.  Growth Drivers (AI and Optics) Ciena’s growth is based on the same market trends that Nokia has highlighted:  AI Ecosystem: CEO Gary Smith emphasized the company’s position as “a global leader in high-speed connectivity” (global leader in high-speed connectivity) and its “expanding role in the AI ecosystem” (expanding role in the AI ecosystem). Data Centers: Growth comes from “durable demand from our cloud and service provider customers” (durable demand from our cloud and service provider customers) as well as “growing opportunities inside and around the data center” (opportunities inside and around the data center). Optics Drives Growth: Segment-wise, Optical Networking was clearly the largest source of revenue (68.7% of Q4 revenue) and experienced strong growth.  3.  What does this mean for Nokia? Ciena is a direct competitor to Nokia’s Network Infrastructure (NI) business (especially optics).  Market Demand Strengthens: Ciena’s record results and aggressive guidance are the strongest possible evidence that the optics and DCI market, driven by AI investments, is in a very strong growth cycle. Nokia’s Optics Outlook: This supports the view of David Heard, head of Nokia’s NI business, that NI is Nokia’s “near-term growth engine” (near-term growth engine), which benefits from the same demand. Synergy and Optimism: Nokia’s stock rise following Ciena’s results reflects investor optimism that Ciena’s success will also scale to Nokia, especially due to its AI/cloud-based optics capacity achieved through the Infinera acquisition. Acquisitions and CPO: Ciena also confirmed its intention to support growth through acquisitions, as it announced the acquisition of Nubis Communications, Inc. during Q4. Nubis is a small company focused on optical solutions, which underscores the strategic importance of the CPO/DCI area.

Lumentum is Nokia’s competitor in the CPO market. Here are Lumentum’s comments from its earnings report and a UBS conference. A timeline is starting to emerge for when these CPO components will be needed, i.e., 6-12 months from now, and activity is starting to pick up.  So, AI has compiled the information. CPO Outlook: Lumentum expects CPO’s meaningful contribution to occur in the second half of calendar year 2026 (Q3 and Q4) and to continue accelerating throughout 2027. The demand forecast is constantly improving, and they are engaging with multiple different customers, not just one main customer. The entire industry is suffering from capacity constraints, especially regarding Indium Phosphide lasers. Lumentum has its own laser production capacity (EML and CW lasers are manufactured at the Japan factory), which makes it a sought-after supplier. Wupen Yuen (President, Global Business Units, Lumentum) notes that if Lumentum wanted to win more customers, it would only need to offer capacity. Especially if customers hear that Lumentum owns its own laser supplies, they are very eager to start cooperation. CPO activity has accelerated among every single hyperscaler, not just in scale-out solutions, but also in scale-up architectures. And here is the AI’s note regarding Nokia and Lumentum.  Lumentum’s and Nokia’s optical solutions are crucial in both:  Scale-Out (Transceivers & OCS): Optics enable the connection of new server clusters over long distances, which is a typical solution for expanding data center environments. Scale-Up (CPO): CPO is designed to address physical and power consumption limitations in scale-up architectures, where electrical transmissions are no longer sufficient for GPU-to-GPU connections.    AI Drives Growth: Lumentum estimates that over 60% of its total revenue now comes from cloud and AI infrastructure. Long-Term Agreements (LTAs): Due to capacity shortages, Lumentum has entered into several long-term agreements (LTAs) with customers. This provides them with predictability and allows for pricing increases. Business Consolidation: Due to capacity constraints, Lumentum is now seeking to consolidate supply and its customer base to those few who are willing to sign LTAs and whom they consider “long-term winners”. They are thus rather “rejecting customers than adding them”.  In summary, the following can be stated:  Lumentum sees significant growth coming from AI infrastructure (over 60% of revenue), especially for Co-Packaged Optics (CPO), which is expected to accelerate in the second half of calendar year 2026 across all hyperscaler players. The company leverages the competitive advantage of its own Indium Phosphide laser production capacity to negotiate long-term agreements, as demand significantly exceeds supply in both CPO-demanding scale-up and scale-out architectures. Nvidia has already signed deals with a handful, including Lumentum, which is one of the largest laser manufacturers in the world and is supplying laser technologies for photonic iterations of its Spectrum-X networking switches. Nvidia is also working with Coherent (the parent company of optical component maker Finisar).  And the AI’s comment regarding Nokia.  There is a clear connection to Nokia, even though Nokia’s name is not directly mentioned in connection with the acquisition of said EML capacity. The connection relates to the management of Indium Phosphide (InP) lasers and Co-Packaged Optics (CPO), which are at the core of Nokia’s optics strategy. Although Nvidia is making deals with Lumentum and Coherent, Nokia’s own, US-based and heavily expandable InP manufacturing capacity (of which EML lasers are an essential part) places it in a unique position in this tightening supply chain war. It is one of the few that can manage this critical component shortage.  One gets the impression when reading articles or analysts’ comments that Nokia has not really been highlighted anywhere – is it flying completely under the radar here?  Nokia manufactures Indium Phosphide-based lasers, including EML lasers (Electro-absorption Modulated Lasers), at its optical semiconductor factories in the United States, California. This manufacturing capacity originates from the Infinera acquisition:  Main Location: Sunnyvale, California. Expansion: Nokia is currently significantly expanding its capacity by establishing a new photonic integrated circuit manufacturing center in South San Jose, California.  These factories are strategically important as they enable Nokia’s vertical integration and its own PIC (Photonic Integrated Circuit) manufacturing, which is needed for building new, highly energy-efficient solutions (such as ICE-D and CPO).
