EBA stress test reflects Nordea's high-quality business

Nordea Bank

On 1 August 2025 the European Banking Authority (EBA) published the results of the EU-wide stress test conducted in cooperation with the European Systemic Risk Board (ESRB), the European Central Bank (ECB) and the European Commission (EC). The forward-looking analysis covers the period 2025-2027 and considers the resilience of financial institutions to adverse economic shocks.

The exercise confirms Nordea's well-managed risk profile and resilient capital position. The 2025 EBA methodology and scenario assumptions are relatively severe for Nordea's Nordic operating geographies.

Under the severe stress scenario, Nordea's CET1 capital ratio is estimated to decline from 15.8% at year-end 2024 to 12.2% at year-end 2025 (low point). The reported CET1 capital ratio at the end of the second quarter of 2025 was 15.6%.

The 2025 exercise includes an examination of capital depletion in a fully implemented CRR3 capital regime. This reflects the unmitigated outcome for REA, calculated using the full standardised approach, which is the base of the output floor, as published in the Capital and Risk Management Report for the first quarter of 2025. In such a regime, Nordea's CET1 ratio would decline to 10.2% at year-end 2025 from 12.8% at 1 January 2025.

Nordea views the outcome of the 2025 exercise as a conservative outcome compared to its overall risk position.

The 2025 EBA stress test is not expected to result in changes to Nordea's business strategy, risk management or capital strategy.

The stress test results, scenarios and methodologies can be found on the website of the European Banking Authority.
