I must come here to comment on my own experiences (at least I believe) with the company’s product. Some time ago, we got Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Carbon laptops at work, where, as far as I understand, the function that checks if you are in front of the screen is by Elliptic (correct me if I’m wrong?). It didn’t even take a week for the younger “tech-savvy” employees to disable the function. The reason was that the “smart” feature didn’t understand if you were sitting still in front of the laptop, but instead locked the screen. A couple more weeks, and IT turned it off for everyone. If the laptop was docked and the user kept the lid closed, this function didn’t tolerate that either, but immediately locked the screen as soon as the time was up. It’s hard to see how the user experience wouldn’t be “global.” Of course, it’s possible that the function can be fixed with software, but since it’s already disabled by users, its “reputation” won’t be able to recover. And if customers are not pleased with the function, is there some kind of threat that Lenovo will abandon the functionality in future devices?
