Flik Helsinki to launch a Business Finland-supported research project on a concept for remotely operated hybrid events

Flik Helsinki Oy, a wholly owned subsidiary of Inderes, is launching a research project to explore a new way of producing international hybrid events through remote operations. Business Finland has granted the project funding of EUR 114,000, while the total estimated value of the project is EUR 228,000. The project will be implemented between September 2026 and December 2027.

The objective of the RemoteOps PoC project is to investigate whether an event space located abroad can be operated entirely, reliably, and to a high standard from Finland. In practice, the entire technical production of the event would be controlled from Helsinki, while support staff, presenters, and the audience are on-site at the event space abroad or participating via the web.

Finnish event expertise is widely recognized across Europe. A significant share of Inderes' annual event business revenue of EUR 9 million comes from international sales. However, events have traditionally been strongly tied to a physical location, requiring a new event venue and a local production team, or the transportation of a production team and equipment to the destination country. As part of its international expansion, Inderes is building scalable event production models that enable it to cost-effectively serve demanding international listed company clients.

Business Finland considers the project to be significant in terms of research. According to the funding decision, the project will generate publicly sharable benchmark data for the industry on IP-based transmission solutions as well as a generalizable architectural framework for remotely operated hybrid event studios. In addition, the research will provide experimental data on the event stakeholders’ user experiences and the overall functionality of the solution.

"What is special about our project is that remote operation applies to an event space that also has an on-site audience and customers. Staff interaction with the remote studio and the customer experience in our demanding customer segment are questions to which we are seeking answers in the final phase of the research with an actual PoC customer event," says Tino Lehtonen, the technician in charge of the project.

"The project is technically demanding and requires a new approach compared to established broadcast solutions, where end-users are mostly behind a screen. However, we have the expertise required for the project in-house: event expertise, technical skills, and in particular, experience in the design and commercialization of digital and remotely produced services," Lehtonen continues.
