Fortum is active in the energy sector. In addition to the provision of electricity, a number of technical solutions are offered in heat optimization as well as apps that are used to keep track of energy consumption. The company also provides charging stations for electric cars. The largest activity is found around the Nordic market. The company was founded in 1998 and is headquartered in Espoo.

Isn’t this just normal business for electricity producers? Fortum has 8 GW of projects in the permitting process. The RTB (ready-to-build) target is 1.2 GW for 2028 and Ready-to-deploy is 2.5 GW. More details are available in the investor presentation. It is interesting that they are aiming for significantly more flexible capacity—it would be good to hear more about this. Data center permitting takes years, so perhaps Fortum will also have time to get involved at a slower pace. However, other (more agile?) operators already have permits ready or under construction for 8 GW of additional capacity. In total, there are 82 GW worth of projects in the planning stages (onshore wind + solar). Demand shouldn’t be able to catch anyone by surprise here. Historically, the capacity factors of nuclear power plants have increased as the plants have aged. There are no longer any new surprises once a plant has been humming along for 40+ years. TVO likely already has the paperwork in to extend operating licenses until 2048 or 2058. At the same time, they are investigating whether power output could be increased by 80 MW per unit. It would be interesting to know why they aren’t looking into a power increase to the level of similar Swedish plants, as those operate at 230 MW higher capacity.

What about the maintenance needs of current nuclear power plants (especially Loviisa) in the future? The operating license is valid until the 2050s, but will maintenance requirements and thus the frequency/length of outages increase as the plants age?

Yesterday, I watched the earnings presentations of 3 companies hyping their potential as electricity suppliers for data centers: UPM, Fortum, and the Swedish forest and energy company SCA. In all three cases, the same pattern repeated. There was a lot of talk about data center opportunities. But there were few signed electricity supply agreements to bring to the table. In practice, Umppi (UPM), Forza (Fortum), and the Swedish cellulose outfit were crafting an investor narrative about looming returns. Analysts also showed great interest in this issue. Much talk, little substance? To some extent, yes, because there aren’t many electricity supply agreements generating bottom-line profits yet. But there was a lot of hype about negotiations here and there. Presumably, company-specific supply agreements will come, and power-hungry data centers may raise general price levels somewhat, even as new energy production is created. Fortum can also profit from its sites—meaning pre-prepared data center plots—as well as district heating from data centers. Umppi intends to appoint a new energy-focused Executive Vice President in the near future. Likely to start constantly shuttling between AI firms. What bothers me here is that they’ve gotten a bit ahead of themselves regarding the timeline for this investor narrative. At this rate, electricity will start flowing to data centers, but likely not in a big way for another 3-4 years. The analyst community is also running a bit hot; for example, Fortum’s investor event last autumn was starting to take on amusing proportions because of this (fortunately, the always-cool @Juha_Kinnunen and @Antti_Viljakainen haven’t been bitten by the data center bug yet ). While AI and data centers are the buzzwords of the day, industrial green investments—which are even more significant in terms of electricity consumption—have been somewhat overshadowed. They will materialize—to the extent they do—likely in the early 2030s. The wars in Iran and Ukraine are acting as major catalysts now. So, patience! Ps. It is good for electricity prices to rise so that investments in production are profitable. If the planning for production increases only begins once the price has already risen, the price won’t increase the supply of electricity very quickly, unfortunately. Hopefully, investment planning will get underway quickly, taking into account consumption forecasts and the price increases driven by the rise in demand.
