Neste produces transport fuel and renewable fuels. Today, the largest operations and extraction are held in the Nordic market, where the company is active in the entire value chain, from extraction to delivery to port depots. In addition, the opportunity is given for direct sales where customers can pick up fuel at selected stations. The largest market is in the Nordic region, and the company is headquartered in Espoo, Finland.

It’s a justified assessment that if the war ends within a couple of weeks, the impact certainly won’t extend through the whole of 2026. Right now, Q2 volumes are surely already being sold, so in my estimation, the current market situation has already made its way strongly into those margins, but not yet into the second half of the year. I can’t say for certain, but I would estimate that margins would level out in a matter of weeks. So, there is still some way to go before the effects reach H2. As a reminder, regarding the current year, capacity is also somewhat limited in its main markets due to Neste’s maintenance turnaround in Porvoo later this year, meaning margins will likely get a boost from this as well toward the end of the year.

I don’t personally believe that ships will stop in Asia, because there are surely already tankers on their way there full of bunker oil, as the price difference compared to, for example, Rotterdam is around $500-800 per ton depending on the quality. It’s hard to say about Neste’s sales volumes and how contracts are structured, but presumably the main market is in Europe due to the location. In any case, diesel prices are rising again, so margins are growing once more.

The situation looks different now from several angles. While the war in Ukraine involved a simultaneous oil and gas crisis, in the Iran situation, various refined products seem to be taking the biggest hit. For example, the price of bunker fuel for ships has gone through the roof, while crude oil is still far from peak prices. The global economy is better shielded from an oil crisis than it was a couple of decades ago, but it is still highly dependent on certain refined products. Right now, it appears that the price panic is not spreading rapidly to natural gas or electricity prices.  Oil market analyst Gaik June Goh wrote a week ago that the price and availability of bunker fuel will stop ships from Asia. Bloomberg’s Javier Blas is writing about the same topic (behind a paywall), and Maersk’s CEO says in his own words: “If we do nothing, we risk ending with dry supply points in Asia.” It’s a shame that Neste’s Singapore refinery doesn’t process raw materials into bunker fuel, but by optimizing Porvoo, results could be achieved quickly. It’s important to take into account that there are products in storage, and the assumption is that these will be loaded first, though it’s hard to say how much is currently in inventory. And since the waterway likely won’t open for a while yet, repairs are already being carried out, so the ramp-up will probably be relatively fast because the reported strikes haven’t caused catastrophic damage—though the situation could, of course, be different. If we assume that inventories can be moved as soon as the route is open and the refineries are running, then prices will drop much faster because there’s no need to find new suppliers, unlike in the case of Russia.

And this assumes that refining capacity is also in working order. There have been some strikes on facilities in the Middle East, so they won’t necessarily be fixed with just a snap of the fingers.

Oil is still not the problem in Europe; refineries in Europe are getting enough oil, but capacity hasn’t been increased, so Russian diesel has been replaced with Middle Eastern diesel. Once the route opens, this problem will be resolved very quickly as the stored diesel is loaded and shipped to Europe.

The war in Ukraine and a war in Iran are fundamentally different in nature. However, the Middle East as a region accounts for a third of global oil production compared to the Ukrainian region. Therefore, a market disruption in the Middle East can be much more far-reaching than in the case of Ukraine.
