Neste produces transport fuel and renewable fuels. Today, the largest operations and extraction are held in the Nordic market, where the company is active in the entire value chain, from extraction to delivery to port depots. In addition, the opportunity is given for direct sales where customers can pick up fuel at selected stations. The largest market is in the Nordic region, and the company is headquartered in Espoo, Finland.

They aren’t even close to each other. HVO now costs $3100 per ton while diesel is $1485 per ton. HVO taxation is about 25 cents per liter lighter, which explains the smallness of the price difference in Finland.

As a sort of “bridge” to that, will biodiesel at this rate soon start being cheaper than fossil diesel in Finland… Or Vahi, does the price still follow the price of traditional fossil diesel just as closely and slavishly, remaining consistently, almost compulsively, a few tens of cents more expensive per liter…

Nordea raises Neste’s target price to 39 euros (previously 35 euros) and reiterates its buy recommendation.

Based on what I heard at the turn of the year regarding Neste’s purchasing prices for UCO in Singapore, they were more than fair, and at the time, they were offering above the prevailing market price in the region. Another thing at the time was that Neste rejected products from UCO collectors even though everything was in order, from quality to the ISCC certificate, but that was perhaps due to SAF production, as only the CORSIA certificate is accepted for that. If Neste starts offering something like a $25 per MT premium price for UCO in Asia, for instance, compared to Argus or another indicator, I can say almost with certainty that significant quantities of raw material would become available.

Perhaps raw material procurement isn’t a problem in itself, but the cost of procuring raw materials is a factor. As I understand it, one of Neste’s strengths is also its pretreatment expertise, which could support the idea of procuring (cheaper?) more difficult raw materials that can nevertheless be refined into fuel using Neste’s technology and expertise.

It’s the exact same waste stream—UCO and palm oil residues—as before, and quality requirements have even tightened, so the processing remains the same as it practically always has. The fact that Neste, for example, plans to use CNSL oil indicates that the company is looking for new raw materials because nothing else is available, and that CNSL is a very problematic product because in Asia they don’t want even 0.1% of it in, say, UCO content, as it causes problems in the equipment. In other words, Neste is intentionally complicating the process, even though, according to the company, raw material procurement is not a problem, which sounds very strange.

Based on Neste’s releases and reports, the production constraints and fluctuating utilization rates in renewable products are not due to a physical shortage of raw materials for Neste. Instead, the challenges are specifically related to the operational performance of the facilities, as well as poor raw material quality and pretreatment. The challenge is to keep complex refineries running without operational interruptions and to process increasingly difficult waste streams through the pretreatment processes.
