Neste produces transport fuel and renewable fuels. Today, the largest operations and extraction are held in the Nordic market, where the company is active in the entire value chain, from extraction to delivery to port depots. In addition, the opportunity is given for direct sales where customers can pick up fuel at selected stations. The largest market is in the Nordic region, and the company is headquartered in Espoo, Finland.

Statistics are certainly great. Wasn’t there some talk at one point about a bubble where all the vehicles were registered there immediately, even if they hadn’t actually been sold? But yeah, at the point when everyone buys a new €40k Tesla every couple of years, I’ll sell my Neste shares and reinvest the money. After all, there are still developing markets where fuel is sold by the side of a dirt road in glass jars of various sizes for vehicles…  There have even been indications that the prices of older internal combustion engine cars are rising. The fuel consumption is higher, but the maintenance and depreciation costs in the long run compensate for this significantly. And many large manufacturers have taken a step back in their electrification plans and have continued developing internal combustion engines after all. Personally, I don’t believe that internal combustion engine cars will significantly disappear within the next 10 years anyway. I see Neste’s prospects as very favorable in the future. Once they expand the loop to aviation and shipping. With the current equipment, vehicles can easily run for 10-20 years with existing technology, and there doesn’t seem to be a shift toward alternative fuels on the horizon that is more significant than the automotive industry, right?

Good point. And while, fortunately, our traffic is electrifying rapidly, the situation is not at all the same globally, meaning there will be demand for oil and refined products for a long time to come.

Percentages mask the fact that even though the relative share of electric vehicles has grown year by year in the 2020s, the total volume of car sales has also grown continuously since the 2020 slump. In other words, the sales volumes of gasoline & diesel cars have not collapsed as one might imagine based on percentages alone. The pie has grown, and as a result, gasoline & diesel car sales are on a slowly declining curve rather than a sharp downward trend, as one might assume by staring only at percentages.

Of course, everything is relative, but war in the Middle East is eternal… There is no peace in sight yet, in the short term it plays into Neste’s hands…

Perhaps we could put these numbers into a bit of perspective: Russian refining capacity:  The world consumes and refines 100 million barrels of oil per day. That is roughly 5 billion tons per year. About 25% of Russia’s oil refining capacity has suffered damage. Russia’s capacity is 350 million tons, meaning roughly 100 million tons of capacity has been affected by the strikes. Russia’s weakened oil refining capacity accounts for about 2% of global capacity. Electrification of transport:  The destruction of refineries affects the short term, especially due to logistical challenges, but the electrification of transport will rapidly reduce demand for refined products. For example, China is the world’s largest oil refiner, with a capacity of 1,000 million tons. Currently, China is also the second-largest consumer of refined products after the United States. However, China’s need for fuel will inevitably decrease, and the decline in demand will accelerate as the fleet electrifies very quickly and the old vehicle fleet is retired from traffic. Over the next 10 years, a significant portion of cars consuming gasoline and diesel will disappear from the market for good. These figures make Russia’s capacity look like a drop in the ocean. Temporary shock:  Personally, I see the current situation as a temporary shock, and unless the situation in the Strait of Hormuz and Russia escalates, this will remain a short-term supply shock. If the situation escalates further, I would see it more as a threat to Neste. After all, drones have already been spotted from the Kilpilahti site with a telescope. Of course, in that scenario, the state of our stock portfolios would likely be the least of our problems. To conclude, here are a few trends: 1) More electric cars are sold in China than total cars sold in the United States:  2) Share of electric vehicles in sales and the fleet in China:  3) The change is also happening globally:

Rotterdam 2 might not contribute much in 2027. Malinen has not yet said anything about the timetable, probably does not happen early part of the 2027. And then remembering how difficult it was to ramp up Singapore 2, it took over a year, I guess. And then Singapore 2 is 11 weeks on maintenance early part of 2027.  Probably 2027 RD volumes will be on the 2026 level, 4 MTons. Maybe a bit skeptical view, but this year growth was expected, and we would be happy if it will be 2025 level. There is always a possibility for upsets also, this year it probably was the Singapore equipment failure, supposedly taking off 200-300 000 Tons.

Check renewables (RD/SAF) production and sales MTons data (in MTons).. It’s vague..  And these data stops me from re-investing to NESTE share.. Margins OK now, not sure how sustainable.. But MTons does not make me happy: 6MTons were promised during 2027.. I don’t see it coming..
