An AI application gave that kind of response regarding the forced ranking of employees. I agree, and apparently there has been similar discussion about the matter in the columns of Helsingin Sanomat. Not exactly a good thing for the work culture within Nokia.

This is an interesting perspective. My own understanding (based on a discussion with GPT 5.2) is that Nokia is in a quite unique position regarding system-level vertical integration, while Coherent is particularly strong in component-level integration. But this is just an amateur’s understanding.. “Coherent cannot achieve the same system-level vertical integration as Nokia in optical engines and CPO. Coherent’s strength lies in its deep control of InP materials and optical components, but the greatest value of CPO and optical engines is generated at the ASIC interface, in packaging, and in the overall system architecture – areas that Nokia masters and Coherent does not own.” “Nokia is in a quite unique position in the system-level vertical integration of CPO technology, as it combines IP systems, optical architecture, SiPh integration, and InP-based active optics under one roof. In my career, I’ve been paid handsomely to improve the work culture of US companies that have tied themselves into knots. This is a very common practice. This often leads to worsening silos, where individuals don’t consider the big picture; instead, they fight tooth and nail to ensure their personal or departmental performance targets are checked off.  These targets might not have any practical value, but by meeting them, they can’t be labeled a “bad employee.” Just check your own box, don’t stand out, and don’t raise issues. Few creatures are as fearful as a white-collar worker in a US firm. Getting fired means losing your livelihood, standard of living, insurance, etc. –  Of course, we hope Nokia isn’t on this path, and certainly many companies have some “slack.”

Coherent Pluggable Modules (800G ZR/ZR+) 2025 was the breakthrough year for 800G pluggable modules. They are no longer just speed upgrades, but are changing network architecture:  Multi-haul performance: For the first time, pluggable modules (such as Nokia’s ICE-X) are able to cover almost all network needs: 800G speeds reach 1,700 kilometers and lower speeds even over 5,000 kilometers. Explosive market growth: Demand forecasts have more than doubled during the year. Deliveries of over 100,000 units are expected in 2026, with the goal of exceeding one million units by 2030.   Throughout the year, multiple industry analysts more than doubled their forecasts to reflect the growing demand. Analyst projections now show a rapid ramp – growing from several thousand units in 2025 to more than 100,000 units in 2026 and exceeding 1 million by 2030. Vendors are updating their supply chain, processes and partnerships to deliver the production capacity required to support this rapid growth.  Thin Transponders “Thin transponders” emerged as a key topic of discussion in 2025, offering a middle ground between traditional optics and direct router integration:  Use case: They enable the benefits of pluggable modules (such as 800G ZR/ZR+) for operators for whom direct IPoDWDM (optics directly in the router) is not suitable for operational reasons. Benefits: They save up to 50% space and 40% power compared to traditional embedded transponders, while maintaining optical network manageability and security features (e.g., encryption).  “Scale Across” – A New Dimension of AI DCI (Data Center Interconnect) has been joined by a new architecture called Scale Across:  Why: Individual data centers are running out of space and power (e.g., with the goal of million-GPU clusters). What: Scale across connects geographically distributed GPU clusters into a single unified computing resource. This requires extremely low latency and high-capacity optical links, where 800G pluggables play a critical role.  Optical Line Systems (OLS) and Automation  Multi-fiber OLS: Hundreds, even over 1,000 fiber pairs are now being installed between data centers at once. Line systems must evolve to support multiple fibers in the same physical size (e.g., multi-rail OLS). AI automation: AI is now being used for predictive maintenance and troubleshooting, helping operators move from reactive operations to proactive network management.  In summary: Nokia’s (and Infinera’s) focus has shifted strongly toward AI-driven optical infrastructure, where 800G pluggable modules and new “thin transponder” solutions enable massive scalability with lower power consumption.
