Market winners and other fast-growing companies that improve their performance every year are always of interest to buyers. On the other hand, losers like Optomed are generally not wanted as acquisitions in growth sectors. If you were on the other side of the table considering M&A, why would you take on a massive amount of extra problems by buying Optomed? That would require years of investment and management focus from the buyer just to turn the company back onto a growth path. It’s better to pay a higher price for top-tier companies where the package is already complete, the talent is world-class, and you can focus on minting money for the shareholders.

Over the weekend, I noticed this interesting detail. A Wiser Asia LinkedIn post about Chairman Salonen’s previous visit had a greeting in the comments section from Emmanuel Sano, the head of Furtenburg: “FURTENBURG supports you.” This company, Furtenburg, is based in the USA. It appears to be a versatile financial house, involved in strategic consulting, investment activities, etc. When a top executive goes public like this, it indicates that Furtenburg is involved in some capacity. Don’t shoot the messenger… even though Gunvald doesn’t justify it much further than a “trust me bro” argument, I strongly believe he is right. A small handheld device loses to a larger tabletop device in image quality because the laws of optics cannot be cheated. There are many publications on the Aurora, but they focus on comparing diagnostic metrics between cameras. And with an optimal patient, a device with slightly poorer image quality is certainly sufficient. However, usability is what matters. How long does one screening take? How fast and easy is it to enter patient data into the machine? It looks like on the Aurora, they are typed in using the camera’s touchscreen. Seems slow. In a study published on Optomed’s website, it was mentioned that it took 4 weeks to train a layperson to use the camera.
