Remedy Entertainment is a game developer. Its operations are primarily focused on the development of action games, with a particular focus on 3D technology. Examples of games that the company has developed include several different versions of Alan Wake, Max Payne, and Control. Remedy also develops its own game engine and tooling technology that powers many of its games. The company was founded in 1995 and is headquartered in Espoo, Finland.

One would think that the buyer also has first-hand knowledge of the upcoming Control sequel and the launch-ready Max Payne when they’ve decided to hit the buy button. Sami Järvi (Sam Lake) supposedly sold shares back when they were around 7 euros. I think they are cooking up some pretty good releases here, staying well within Remedy’s strengths and with Rockstar’s support. I think my expectations are actually higher for Max Payne, even though the reception of Control 2 (Control Resonant) has been a positive surprise.

Since the trade was executed at a price of 14.50, it indicates that the initiative to buy came from Herlin, not the sellers, as a trade initiated by the seller would have included a clear discount on the prevailing price level.

It caused a fairly negative reaction when it turned out that the individual owners had sold their shares. The future might not be looking bright. Or perhaps they just want to cash out for reason x. And the buyer probably couldn’t be better.

The market didn’t like the news, to say the least. The share price dropped about €1.50 below the block trade price. After all the negative history, does the market interpret this as the captains being the first to jump off a sinking ship? It would be interesting to know whose initiative this trade was. Herlin probably could have easily gathered a couple of hundred thousand shares if he had bothered to approach small-cap funds over the last few months. There was certainly a genuine desire from the management to sell, which doesn’t send a very good signal, especially since Mäki and Järvi already made a few million by selling at the 2021 peak prices to Tencent. This time, they sold significantly more shares. On the other hand, on a personal level, I understand it. Both Järvi and Mäki likely have most of their net worth tied up in the company, and Resonant is largely a binary “go big or go home” situation regarding the company’s future (and the value of their holdings). In that sense, I understand scaling back at this stage and securing millions before retirement, but the signal sent to the market is definitely ugly. With all due respect to the Herlins, they aren’t exactly video game industry experts, and their ownership won’t bring the same kind of value through networking as getting Tencent on board did back in the day, even if the company’s financial viability or prospects might improve with the Herlins’ involvement.

It’s very possible that the journalist made a calculation error and edited the article afterwards, which is why it can no longer be found. If I recall correctly, I read in the article that Järvi had sold 250k shares out of a 560k position. Apologies, I’m on the road using my phone.
