SSAB and Danieli signed a contract on the technology solution for the new Luleå mini-mill

SSAB

Following the Early Service Agreement (ESA) signed in July 2024, SSAB and Danieli have now signed a contract under which Danieli will supply a highly-automated technology solution for SSAB's new mini-mill in Luleå, Sweden, consisting of two electric arc furnaces, secondary metallurgy, a caster and strip mill.

The new Luleå mini-mill will have a capacity of 2.5 Mt/year and consist of two electric arc furnaces, advanced secondary metallurgy, a direct strip rolling mill to produce SSAB's specialty products, and a cold rolling complex to serve the mobility segment with a broader offering of premium products.

The mini-mill will produce hot-rolled strip in thicknesses ranging from 1.3 mm to 25.4 mm, in widths of up to 2100 mm and coils of up to 40 tonnes of strip.

The meltshop will feature two 210 ton Digimelters featuring a Q-One power feeder that incorporates thermal recovery for district heating; ECS continuous scrap charging; and a MeltModel suite for dynamic control of the melting profile.

Steel grades will be produced via electric melting supported by specific technological packages, two twin-ladle refining stations and two twin-tank vacuum degassers. Endless scrap charging will improve furnace efficiency and reduce NOx emissions.

The investment is an important step in SSAB's strategy to establish a leading position in decarbonized special and premium steels. When completed, SSAB will decommission the existing blast furnace-based production system in Luleå. This will reduce Sweden's CO2 emissions by 7% in addition to the 3% from the Oxelösund mill conversion.
