SSAB delivers decarbonized steel to Vattenfall's solar park project in Germany

SSAB is supplying decarbonized steel to Vattenfall for the construction of the ground-mounted solar park Juliusburg/Krukow in Schleswig-Holstein, Germany. The steel, SSAB Zero™, is produced from recycled scrap using fossil-free electricity and biogas, resulting in up to 70 percent lower fossil carbon emissions compared to conventional steel.

SSAB Zero™ will be used in the supporting structures on which the solar panels are mounted. In total, more than 9,000 steel profiles will be used, with a combined weight of 209 tonnes. Although solar power already plays an important role in Germany's energy transition, the construction of solar parks still generates emissions. By choosing decarbonized steel, the climate impact is addressed already at the material selection stage.

"Projects like this demonstrate how the climate impact from renewable energy production can be further reduced by also taking responsibility for emissions in the supply chain. With SSAB Zero™, we deliver decarbonized steel with the same quality and performance as traditional steel. Vattenfall's decision to use our steel is a clear example of how ambitious customers can help scale solutions that reduce emissions and strengthen demand for decarbonized materials," says Matts Nilsson, Executive Vice President and Head of Sales, SSAB Europe.

Vattenfall sees the use of decarbonized steel as part of its broader efforts to reduce emissions across the entire value chain.

"The electricity generated from this solar farm will help reduce Germany's dependence on imported fossil fuels. But for us fossil freedom does not end with electricity generation - it starts right at the beginning of the supply chain. That is why we are pleased to take this pioneering step together with our partner SSAB, using low emission steel for the substructures. By leading the way as a company, we support the long-term societal goal of becoming fossil free," says Claus Wattendrup, Head of Solar and Batteries at Vattenfall.
