Sustainable Energy Solutions Sweden Holding AB, ("SENS") today announces that the capacity of the Battery Energy Storage Project (BESS) in Pyhäsalmi, Finland, has doubled from 85 MW to 170 MW. This makes the project even more attractive to potential investors and contributes to the further development of a fossil-free and CO2-neutral energy supply in the Nordic region.

"By doubling the capacity of our battery storage project in Pyhäsalmi, we have successfully strengthened the project, which is an important development for both SENS and our partners. The increased capacity strengthens the project's business potential and makes it an even more attractive investment case for external actors. This is a clear example of how we are working to optimize our solutions to meet the growing demand for efficient energy storage systems," comments Henrik Boman, CEO of SENS

SENS has established a strong presence in Finland in 2024, not least through the development of the Callio project at the Pyhäsalmi mine. This specific project combines a battery energy storage system (BESS) with an underground pumped storage power plant (UPHS) and possibly solar photovoltaic (PV) parks, creating an attractive energy cluster that will contribute to a stable energy supply in the region.

On October 2, 2024, SENS announced that it had acquired 100% of two sub-projects within the comprehensive energy storage project in Pyhäsalmi. The acquisitions included an 85 MW battery energy storage system (BESS) and a 75 MW underground pumped storage facility (UPHS).

Following technical advances in BESS technology, SENS can now announce that the capacity of the BESS project has doubled from 85 MW to 170 MW. The increased scope represents a significant increase in the potential revenue stream and strengthens the project's position in both the frequency and arbitrage markets. SENS has already secured a ready-to-build status for the BESS project and will continue the dialog with potential investors interested in acquiring the project.

The Pyhäsalmi project is a key component of the ongoing energy transition and, when commissioned in 2025, will help stabilize the electricity grid by providing power balancing and frequency regulation.
