The aim of the planned changes is to support the long-term competitiveness of Valmet’s Biomaterials Solutions and Services segment and the efficiency of the company’s global production in line with the company’s Lead the Way strategy. As global economic uncertainty continues to affect customer decision-making, the company plans to evaluate actions to adapt to the market situation. The plans concern a maximum of 170 positions in Sundsvall, a maximum of 55 positions in Gothenburg, and a maximum of 130 positions in Jelenia Góra. Valmet strengthens its global competitiveness through its Global Supply Chain unit and aims for 100 million euros in cost efficiency through procurement, logistics, and production optimization by 2030. The planned measures in Sweden and Poland represent the most significant production-related changes currently identified in the Global Supply Chain unit. As a result of these planned changes, Valmet estimates potential annual net cost savings of approximately 20 million euros, fully realized by the beginning of 2027. The planned closure of production operations in Sundsvall and the proposed changes in Gothenburg and Jelenia Góra will be negotiated with employee representatives in accordance with local legislation and practices. A new three-megawatt electric boiler will be installed at the factory and integrated into the power plant’s heat production. The total value of the investment is two million euros, and it is expected to be completed by the end of 2026. The electric boiler produces hot thermal oil, which is utilized in both production processes and building heating. The boiler is intended to serve as a base load unit, while the existing gas and oil boilers will be reserved for peak load situations. The solution enables the selection of the most cost-effective and low-emission energy source at any given time: electricity, gas, or light fuel oil. In addition to the electric boiler, the investment includes an expansion of the power grid connection, modifications to the thermal oil piping, and an update to the automation system. The electrical capacity will be increased from 3.5 megawatts to seven megawatts to ensure the safe and efficient operation of the new boiler and future production equipment investments. Valmet’s Yrittäjänkatu unit has used fossil-free electricity since 2023. By replacing fossil fuels, this investment enables a further reduction in the factory’s greenhouse gas emissions, estimated at 25–50 percent compared to current levels.

The delivery is a continuation of the Valmet Kappa analysis technology that the mill has utilized for a long time – now in its fourth generation. The collaboration began over 30 years ago when the first Kappa analyzer was delivered to the mill in 1994. The order was included in Valmet’s orders received for the fourth quarter of 2025.
