Xoma AB: SVT Highlights Xoma's collaboration with Umeå University

XOM BPress release28.04.2025 klo 10.21

Groundbreaking Research on Microalgae

In a recently published article from SVT Nyheter, the groundbreaking research led by Christiane Funk at Umeå University is highlighted. The research explores the potential of microalgae as the "waste management workers" of the future. The research team has demonstrated that local microalgae can purify industrial wastewater by removing heavy metals such as cadmium and arsenic.

Collaboration with Umeå University

Xoma AB is proud to actively contribute to this important research project through a collaboration with Umeå University. As part of the project, Xoma has provided water samples from the Swedish base industry, enabling realistic and relevant testing of microalgae's ability to purify process water under real-world conditions.

By supplying researchers with authentic samples, Xoma has helped validate the effectiveness of microalgae on complex water streams-an essential step towards scaling the technology from laboratory environments to industrial applications.

FLOW

Xoma's FLOW system is a commercial application of the biological principles confirmed by the research:

  • Biosorption and bioaccumulation: Microalgae absorb and bind heavy metals and nutrients.

  • Low energy consumption and minimal chemical use: Contributes to lower operational costs and reduced environmental impact.

  • Resource recovery: Recovered metals and algal biomass can be used in new, sustainable production processes.

This makes FLOW a solution that not only purifies water efficiently but also supports the industry's transition to a circular economy.

Support for FLOW's market position

The collaboration with Umeå University strengthens FLOW's the system's potential for real-world industrial applications. The positive research results confirm that Xoma is on the right path toward delivering a scalable, sustainable, and innovative solution for the future of water purification.

Summary

Xoma AB is proud to, together with Umeå University, drive the development of microalgae-based water purification forward. By combining advanced research with practical, industrial solutions through FLOW, we position ourselves as a leading player in environmental technology and sustainable industrial development. Our joint work proves that the future of water purification-based on microalgae-is already here. The results from the tests will be presented in the coming weeks.
