BeammWave Advances 6G mmWave Ecosystem as 3GPP Evaluates Digital Beamforming Architecture

BeammWave has successfully introduced Digital Beamforming to the standardization agenda at the 3GPP RAN4#119 meeting in Dalian, China, marking a pivotal moment for the future of the 6G mmWave ecosystem.

The 3GPP has officially commenced evaluating the feasibility of Digital Beamforming for device architectures (UE RF) in high-frequency bands (FR2). This study explores the potential of including Digital Beamforming as a standard reference architecture in 6G, establishing it as a highly capable evolution alongside traditional analog beamforming.

The evaluation will thoroughly study two primary areas critical to network operators and device manufacturers:

Cost and Power Efficiency: Assessing how modern, state-of-the-art technologies can deliver significant enhancements in power consumption and cost compared to the initial 5G study phase.
System and Specification Impact: Outlining the specific effects on base station implementations (gNB/aNB), Radio Resource Management (RF/RRM) requirements, and overall network procedures to ensure seamless integration.
