Kempower and EVlution Charge advance port terminal electrification in Canada at Global Container Terminals in Port of Vancouver

Kempower, a leading global provider of DC fast-charging solutions for electric vehicles, and EVlution Charge, its official Sales and Service Partner in Canada, today announced the deployment of charging infrastructure at Global Container Terminals’ (GCT) Vancouver location, which serves the Port of Vancouver, one of Canada’s largest ports. The charging infrastructure supports the electrification of GCT’s service vehicle fleet and the demands of daily terminal operations.

“Following a thorough technical and operational assessment, GCT selected Kempower for its charging density, reliability and flexibility to support our 24/7 terminal operations. The system enables opportunity charging during shift changes and breaks, maximizing equipment availability while minimizing operational disruption,” said Kyron Harvett, Manager Operations Technology at GCT. “We recently demonstrated this capability through a successful heavy-duty battery-electric terminal tractor trial, operating around the clock over multiple days using opportunity charging alone. With near 100% uptime and excellent support from Kempower and EVlution, we look forward to expanding our charging infrastructure as GCT continues to electrify its equipment fleet,” concluded Harvett.

Kempower’s distributed and modular charging technology is designed with built-in redundancy to maximize uptime and keep vehicles moving for daily operations. Its flexible design allows charging infrastructure to fit around existing port operations, helping fleets maintain productivity and keep equipment moving without disrupting day-to-day activities.

“A container terminal runs on its own clock, not ours, and the fleet cannot wait on a charger to move containers,” said George Ivanchikov, President and Co-Founder of EVlution Charge. “We delivered this project and we maintain it, so GCT has one team accountable for all 42 plugs being ready at the start of every shift.”

“Port electrification requires charging technology that can adapt to operations and make efficient use of available power,” said Kempower North America President Monil Malhotra. “GCT’s Vancouver deployment demonstrates how Kempower’s flexible charging systems can support diverse port operations, enabling shared charging infrastructure to serve both container-handling equipment and large service vehicle fleets.”

The site, which features 21 dual-plug Kempower Satellites, provides 42 fast-charging plugs and 2.05 megawatts of available charging power. The chargers are operational and support GCT’s electric service vehicles as part of the terminal’s ongoing sustainability efforts of achieving a 45% absolute emissions reduction by 2030.

The deployment further expands Kempower’s globally growing portfolio of terminal and port operations. As more terminals and ports invest in electrification, Kempower is building on this momentum with reliable technology to support operational and sustainability goals.
