Ronin’s comments on the performance of Terveystalo and Pihlajalinna’s competitor Mehiläinen  Mehiläinen, a competitor to Terveystalo and Pihlajalinna, already published its annual report in February, but we will go into more detail about the company’s development in this comment. Mehiläinen clearly accelerated its growth last year, but this was largely inorganic international growth driven by acquisitions. As international business continues to gain weight, the comparability at the group level with the companies we follow deteriorates, and development must therefore be compared through the most comparable segments. In terms of relative profitability, the company’s development was practically stable, being at the same level as Terveystalo (measured by adj. EBITA). In comparable business, the company’s profitability is slightly below Terveystalo’s level, but clearly stronger than Pihlajalinna’s. Mehiläinen expects revenue and profit to continue growing in 2026, which is expected due to the acquisitions already made. It certainly pays to take care of skilled and top-tier employees. Occupational health is an attraction and retention factor that employers either understand or they don’t. The comprehensive scope of health services is Terveystalo’s competitive advantage. Reducing bureaucracy and utilizing digital and AI applications, on the other hand, brings much-needed efficiency and cost competitiveness. Between Terveystalo and the client, matters are handled as agreed. Hopefully, Terveystalo continues to serve its clients credibly in this regard, in a way that keeps experts in productive work with the highest possible utilization rate. In that case, occupational health services become a value-adding factor of production.

This is not a Terveystalo-specific problem; it affects all private healthcare providers within the occupational healthcare framework. Ultimately, ambiguity/uncertainty regarding the payer reduces the service’s primary selling points (ease of use/cost-free nature for the user) regardless. It doesn’t matter whether the root cause of the confusion is the employer’s insurance policy, the occupational health clinic’s practices, or the complexity of the insurance terms. In practice, I would argue it is all three combined. An election victory for the Social Democrats / a leftist government will very likely lead to occupational healthcare being undermined in some way. And as we have seen, Terveystalo’s growth is already sputtering even without any such interference. Edit: Maybe if you wanted to turn this into a “positive problem” and a growth driver, Terveystalo should develop some kind of "Claudebot"™ that would make insurance decisions on the fly in real-time. But that would require an insurance company partner to be on board, so I’m not holding my breath for when that happens.

What I meant was that they call the employees of their occupational healthcare clients and sell them consumer services, such as dental care.  This shouldn’t affect the company’s costs in any way; they’re essentially just using employee data as leads (which I assume is allowed unless the employee has opted out). In my opinion, what is available to whom through occupational healthcare and how those services are “sold” is a separate discussion.

I disagree. Terveystalo also markets everything under the sun directly to the employees of their occupational health clients. Some employees then take the offers and some don’t. These days, you really can’t verify anything from a Terveystalo invoice anymore regarding patient safety etc.—who visited, if they even did. Overbilling by Terveystalo’s doctors has also been discussed in the media, which increases distrust. Terveystalo bills the occupational health client for, among other things, operational planning, which in practice means, for example, the occupational health nurse’s own scheduling of when to do this or that for each client. I ended up moving my company’s occupational health services away from Terveystalo for the reasons mentioned above, among others. Additionally, Terveystalo’s list prices are more expensive than, for example, Mehiläinen. In a termination situation, discounts on fees would have suddenly become available, but that was the final straw. Dealing with Terveystalo has become similar to working with a lawyer: an open tab for billing, but with the difference that you can’t verify the invoices in any way. I don’t think I’m alone in my sentiment, and I believe more and more of Terveystalo’s occupational health clients will switch to other service providers. Terveystalo reeks too much of a greedy listed company from the perspective of a (former) customer.

I think this is more an issue with the contract and insurance taken out by the company in question than it is with Terveystalo. It’s crystal clear that a company can pay for insurance and a contract where everything is covered for the employee, and then it is a very easy service for the user. It is a mistake for a Terveystalo customer service representative to say, “yes, it’s covered by insurance.” There is a sort of limbo here where no one really takes full responsibility for who should be guiding the user. (Is it IF, the service provider, or the company that has shaped the contract between IF ↔ the service provider?) I recently read through a similar contract for a company regarding what is covered, and it is incomprehensibly unclear. However, I would see it as the responsibility of the company’s HR to be able to instruct the employee correctly or to find designated/paid contact persons at Terveystalo who do this on behalf of the company. This is certainly not just a Terveystalo-centric problem. I would be more interested in how an SDP (Social Democratic Party) election victory would, as a so-called threat scenario, affect the operations of private healthcare firms.
