Kempower operates in the industrial sector. The company is a developer of charging solutions and services aimed at the automotive sector. The range mainly includes charging posts, stations, sockets, and associated electronic equipment. In addition to the main business, various after-sales services and technical support are offered. The largest operations are found in the Nordic region and parts of Europe.

This is very interesting reflection. Of course, the European power grid is already in China’s hands simply due to solar inverters, so we are already late… Europe is in a difficult situation because when there isn’t really any money, everything cheap is of interest

I beg to differ once again. First of all, 50 charging points—so cables in 50 different locations? By the end of the year? In Finland, there are currently about 28 electric cars per charger, and additional cars (new + used) are arriving at a rate of about 1,100 per week. So, all these BYD “mighty chargers” would only satisfy 10 days’ worth of demand. Secondly, no operator is going to source megawatt-level power for charging a single (!) passenger car (which is what the article mentions; trucks aren’t mentioned at all). Instead, development will continue toward larger charging hubs, where expensive grid connections can be put to work as much as possible. This is why BYD is building these themselves, at heavy losses. Thirdly, why specifically Finland? If they intend to install 200–300 across Europe by Q2, why would ~10% of those come to the backwoods where only about 2,000 BYD cars have been sold? None of which are capable of anything near a megawatt.  There was no mention of this regarding Norway or Sweden anywhere else either. It seems like a pretty desperate attempt to scare Kempower, or whatever this is.  One of those figures can’t be right. For trucks, this would make some sense, but even then, a single charger is too little. When trucks come off a ship or go to one, they don’t have time to wait in line for a single charger. IF BYD charging arrives here, it’s a good thing for electric mobility. For Kempower, it’s completely irrelevant.

I am personally reflecting on the same thing that has happened previously in, for example, telecommunications networks, where China is being pushed out—specifically regarding Huawei—because there is a desire to keep China out of critical infrastructure. If motoring becomes electrified, do we want to rely on Chinese technology to any extent when it comes to charging infrastructure? Cars are still replaceable, but the charging network industry could also be disrupted through dumping, potentially crushing the competition. Is this threat scenario realistic?

Kauppalehti reports “BYD is building a megawatt-class charging network in Finland” 50 charging points are coming to Finland by the end of 2026. Available to all electric vehicle drivers. An interesting opening, and likely good news for consumers. In Chinese style, the price of charging will probably be quite aggressive because there is no limit  BYD is a tough competitor for Kempower, as it plays by completely different rules than European manufacturers. Typical for the Chinese are very low purchase prices and excellent financing terms. We remain excited to see what the Chinese march into the European charging fields will be like. If BYD starts an “electricity price war,” it would be poison for companies considering expanding their charging networks. One day, a competitor might appear next to your own charging station field selling electricity at half the price. This must, of course, be taken into account in the investment risk analysis. It remains to be seen whether some kind of “extra” regulation will be targeted at Chinese charger manufacturers in the future. That is, if Europe feels that an EV charging station is in some way critical infrastructure and thus the power grid should be “protected.”

I had to go try out Alpi’s gear yesterday at a new site and I can say that I’ll be sticking with Kempower in the future  Empty charging station, Tesla with a warm battery, SoC 19%, and the Alpitronic pushed a maximum of 39 kW. The average seemed to be around 30 kW… Quite a pathetic performance this time, even though these are supposedly proven to be actually good chargers. User experience was okay, I’d give the edge to Kempower here. Alpi’s “handshake” happened quickly and the ABC app worked well as usual. A minus for the lack of “ChargEye”, meaning I couldn’t scan any QR code etc. (or at least I didn’t find one) to follow the charging on my phone. I hope for equally poor performances for others visiting these chargers, so that S-Group leaves the Alpis as just a one-time experiment

Long-term customer S Group has opened a new charging station in Helsinki and has done so with Alpitronic chargers. Previously, S Group (ABC-lataus) used only Kempower chargers, but now, for one reason or another, Alpitronic has been brought into the mix. Consequently, Kempower’s “exclusivity” with Finland’s largest charging service provider came to an end.  This is likely the site at the corner of Maskuntie and Humalistonkatu.
