Oma Savings Bank is a Finnish bank that serves private and corporate customers nationwide through its branch offices and digital service channels. Here is a new company report from Kassulta on OmaSp after Q3.   OmaSp’s Q3 result was slightly lower than our expectations, which was explained by decreased revenues. Cost development, on the other hand, was encouraging, which also led to an increase in our earnings forecasts. However, against a subdued profitability and growth outlook, the share’s pricing does not offer an attractive return expectation to counterbalance the still elevated risks. We reiterate our reduce recommendation, but raise our target price to EUR 10.0 (previously EUR 8.5) in line with our earnings forecasts. Quoted from the report: Stabilization was seen in the quality of the loan portfolio Credit losses were well in line with our expectations. Thus, the moderation seen in the previous quarter continued. Credit losses were still quite high at EUR 10 million (0.69% of the loan portfolio). The weak economic situation and liquidity, especially in the SME sector, have thus kept credit loss amounts elevated. On the other hand, no further deterioration was seen in the quality of the loan portfolio, and the amount of non-performing loans remained at 8.6% of the loan portfolio. Although far-reaching conclusions cannot yet be drawn from the development of a single quarter, the negative trend has nevertheless stabilized. Well, now OmaSp’s interim report is out. The housing loan portfolio decreased by 3.7%. The corporate customer loan portfolio decreased by 17.9%! The deposit portfolio decreased by 0.7%. One thing I missed was the growth in customer numbers. Branches have been established, and presumably none have been closed. In addition, a corporate portfolio of a certain bank was acquired. Have customers left? How are all those lawsuits concerning the former management progressing?

In Finland, IRBA is used by major banks only by Nordea and Danske. OP reverted to using the standard method at the beginning of 2023.

Oma Säästöpankki cancels its application for a self-supervision permit for solvency risks (IRB permit). Hardly surprises anyone. Hopefully, it has also already been baked into the share price. It’s obvious that such an operator will not be practicing any kind of “independent” self-supervision for a long time. On the other hand, I assume (at least I hope) that even the purest of Finnish banking and financial institutions are always in the gently tight embrace of financial and banking supervision. Here are Kassu’s pre-earnings comments as OmaSP publishes its Q3 results on Monday morning.  We expect OmaSp’s result to have decreased from the comparison period. At this point, the decline in results is more strongly attributable to the narrowing net interest income, as profitability in the comparison period already suffered significantly from an increased cost structure. In addition, our interest, as usual, focuses on the development of credit losses and loan portfolio quality, where we do not yet expect to see a clear turn for the better due to the persistently subdued economic situation.
